Western Hudson Bay Polar Bear Quota Increased
IQALUIT, Nunavut (October 28, 2011) – The polar bear quota for the 2011-2012 harvest year is increasing from 8 to 21 bears for the Western Hudson Bay subpopulation which includes the area around the communities of Arviat, Baker Lake, Whale Cove, Rankin Inlet and Chesterfield Inlet.
Nunavut Teacher Education Program and Nunavut Teachers Association renew partnership
The Nunavut Teacher Education Program and the Nunavut Teachers Association have renewed a key partnership. As a consequence of the agreement, fourth-year NTEP students will be vested with the same rights, responsibilities and professional benefits as regular members of the Nunavut Teachers Association. For example, this will permit them to now register, attend and participate in scheduled sessions during the Territory wide Professional Development Conference to be held in Iqaluit in February / 2012. This partnership will provide opportunities for our Student Teachers to engage in capacity building and enhance their skill sets as they move along the path to degree completion through the University of Regina.
The Nunavut Teacher Education Program presently has Year 4 students completing Practica (Internships) in the following communities and schools in Nunavut:
• Iqaluit – Nakasuk School
• Cambridge Bay (Iqaluktuuttiaq) – Kullik Ilihakvik
• Rankin Inlet (Kangiqtiniq) – Leo Ussak School / Simon Alaittuq School
• Arctic Bay (Ikpiarjuk) – Inuujaq School
• Baker Lake (Qamani’tuaq) – Rachel Arngnammaktiq School
• Repulse Bay (Naujaat) – Tusarvik School
• Gjoa Haven (Uqhuqtuuq) – Qiqirtaq Ilihakvik
On Tuesday, October 18, the Nunavut Teacher Education Program formally recognized the partnership at Nunatta Campus, Nunavut Arctic College in Iqaluit. A cheque was presented to the Nunavut Teachers Association to cover the Association dues for each of our Level 4 Student Teachers for the academic year.
As well, Certificates of Appreciation were presented to Robin Langill, President (NTA), and Emile Hatch, Executive Director (NTA).

Staff of Nakasuk School, Iqaluit, participated in Phase Three of a Year Planning Workshop. Teachers worked with their Grade Level Team throughout the session. They discussed the following components of Year Planning: Learning Outcomes; Curricular Strategies; Assessment and Evaluation; IQ Cross Curricular Competencies; and Materials and Resources.
Dwayne Haqpi, a fourth year Nunavut Teacher Education Program (NTEP) student from Baker Lake, is currently engaged in his Practicum at the school. Consequently, as part of his study, he is actively involved in all aspects of the academic year.
We are pleased to have Dwayne receive such positive exposure to Teaching and Curriculum Initiatives at Nakasuk School.

This year Nakasuk School, Iqaluit, has again entered into a partnership with the Nunavut Teacher Education Program of Arctic College.
Nunavut Teacher Education Program welcomes students and staff to new school year
it's that time of year! Students and staff with the Nunavut Teacher Education Program kicked off the new school year registering for classes at Nunatta Campus in Iqaluit.
The Nunavut Teacher Education Program (NTEP), in partnership with the University of Regina, offers a campus and community based program prepares Nunavummiut to become classroom teachers in Nunavut schools. The emphasis is on training primary and elementary teachers, but students may choose to practice at the Junior High and High School levels. The program has a strong focus on practice, and the theory learned in courses is applied in classroom situations through observation and teaching.

Piqqusilirivvik is the new Inuit Cultural Learning Facility which is being established in Clyde River with satellite programming in Baker Lake and Igloolik. It is dedicated to enabling the transfer of traditional culture, knowledge, life style, skill sets and values, taught in the Inuit language and based on Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit guiding principles.

Nunavut students get recipe for success from Inuit Elders
Arctic College students were sharpening their skills in Hall Beach, Nunavut this month with a traditional Ulu and Knife Sharpening Workshop taught by local Inuit Elders David and Sabina Issigaitok.
Arctic College nursing student receives 2010 Laura Ulluriaq Gauthier Scholarship
Nunavut Arctic College student Diane Iyago of Baker Lake was awarded the 2010 Laura Ulluriaq Gauthier Scholarship. The announcement was made in the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut by the Hon. Lorne Kusugak, Minister of Community and Government Services and Minister responsible for the Qulliq Engergy Corporation.
