Support your environment with National Sweater Day!

Written by

February 9th, 2012, is National Sweater Day!

Turn down your heat and turn up your sweater! We are calling on Canadians to turn down their thermostats and wear a fun sweater to symbolize their commitment to the environment. This is a fun way to get faculty, students, and staff involved in a fun and simple campus event that raises awareness about energy conservation.

Unpack those cool, creative and interesting sweaters and send us a photo!

Neil Christopher is a Faculty Member, Education Programs, and is responsible for the delivery of Science / Media within the Nunavut Teacher Education Program (NTEP) framework. Additionally, he sits on the Professional Standards Committee and is currently preparing for the delivery of a pan – Nunavut pilot course.

Somehow, he still manages to find time to pursue publishing ventures.

After three years of work, one of his projects, the Common Insects of Nunavut book is finally completed. This Inuktitut and English publication brings together science knowledge and Inuit traditional knowledge on many of the insects that can be found in Nunavut.  As well, hundreds of full-color photographs and black-line illustrations will help students indentify and learn about these important members of the Arctic ecosystem. The book is currently being distributed across Nunavut by the Department of Education.

The Common Insects of Nunavut book project was a large undertaking that was made possible by the cooperation of many departments and organizations in Nunavut, including Nunavut Arctic College, the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board, the Department of Education, the Department of Culture, Language, Elders and Youth, Nunavut Bilingual Education Society and Inhabit Media Inc. The Common Insects of Nunavut was researched and written by Carolyn Mallory, and managed by a team that included two Nunavut Teacher Education Program Faculty members.

We congratulate Neil on his efforts.

Canadians in Durban hold moment of silence for the fifth Colossal Fossil in a row

(Durban, South Africa) Today, Canada was awarded the dubious honour of Fossil of the Year for the fifth year running at COP17 in Durban, South Africa. Canadians in Durban were on hand to accept the award, and to pass it on to the next worst offender in recognition that Canada’s actions have become so egregious that they have been left behind on the sidelines of global climate progress.

The Nanisiniq Arviat History Project's Team members Jordan Konek, Curtis Konek, April Dutheil and Dr. Frank Tester are attending COP 17 Durban, South Africa. On December 6, 2011, the group held a press briefing with members of the media to share their experiences and the perspectives of Inuit Elders on the impacts of our world's changing climate. Click here to watch it now.
