The Environmental Technology Program's 2011/2012 academic year is off to a great start.
Classes began on September 6 with two full classes of students. September’s first year intake was a maximum 16 students, and 14 second year students returned as well. However, not only do we have a lot of students, we have a lot of enthusiastic students. Energy, excitement, and pride flow from staff and students alike, and are palpable as you walk around the program’s new building.
Since starting classes the students have used this energy to get through a very busy month. The students have so far received certification in firearm’s safety and first aid, completed their fall field camps, and are just now finishing up their first course modules.
The program is also benefiting greatly from the recent hiring of Michelle McEwan as a full-time instructor for the program. Michelle came to us from the Nunavut Research Institute, has a background in biology, and an excellent work ethic. Already, Michelle has taken the lead on setting up the program’s new lab and has successfully coordinated the recent Marine Biology Field Camp. She has also brought a lot of energy and some fresh new ideas to the program.
And finally, our NEW building! The new ETP building, part of the new Nunavut Research Institute’s Science Campus for Arctic College, is also now fully operational. Although the program moved into the building this past February, it took most of the summer for the building to be properly furnished, unpacked, and hooked up. The building has been a huge boost to staff and student moral and program pride. The great lighting, fresh air, open spaces, and well equipped classrooms make the facility a joy to work and study in.
In short, the program is riding a huge wave of energy and excitement and we’re all looking forward to a banner academic year.
