Fuel Spill at Resolute Bay tank farm

Written by  Community and Government Services News Release

IQALUIT, Nunavut (October 28, 2011) – A fuel spill at the Government of Nunavut tank farm in Resolute Bay last night is being contained and cleaned-up. No injuries were associated with the spill.

Our petroleum product division will be on the ground tomorrow but is already working with the local community fuel delivery contractor and other stakeholders to contain the spill and clean up the contamination,” said Minister of Community and Government Services, Lorne Kusugak.

Because the days are so short and the investigation is taking place mainly in the dark, it is difficult to get an accurate estimate of volume. The petroleum product division continues to attempt to do so, however, initial estimates are in range of 100,000 litres.

“I would like to assure the residents of Resolute Bay that this fuel spill will not affect the community’s gasoline supply,” said Kusugak. “My department will ensure that the residents of Resolute Bay will have an adequate supply of gasoline in the community until the next annual fuel resupply.”

Minister Kusugak and MLA for Quttiktuq, Ron Elliott, will be in Resolute Bay tomorrow and will tour the site during their visit.

An RCMP investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of the spill.
