IQALUIT, Nunavut (January 19, 2012) – Air Greenland today announced the opening of an airlink between Iqaluit and Nuuk, Greenland that is scheduled to start June 22, 2012.

“This is exciting news for Nunavut and Iqaluit,” said Nunavut Premier, Eva Aariak. “It opens a whole new world for further collaboration in culture, education, language and unlocks the potential for future partnerships in business and tourism.”

Air Greenland plans to fly between Iqaluit and Nuuk on Mondays and Fridays, starting in June and intending to run until September 3, 2012. The flight will take approximately one hour and 45 minutes.

In February 2011, Government of Nunavut officials and interested business owners made a presentation to a delegation from Greenland on the benefits of using Iqaluit as their point of entry to North America and a link to Nunavut.

“There are so many areas such as, tourism, fishery, construction and mining that can be developed now that we have direct access to Greenland. People around the world are looking to do business in the north and can now travel across the Davis Strait to see how we can mutually benefit from partnerships,” said Peter Taptuna, Minister of Economic Development and Transportation.

There is a 20-year history of flight between Iqaluit and Greenland – 13 years between Iqaluit and Nuuk and seven years between Kangerlussuaq, and Iqaluit.
