GN and NFB launch Unikkausivut: Sharing our Stories film collection

Written by  Government of Nunavut News

The Unikkausivut: Sharing Our Stories film collection, a jointly funded program between the GN and the National Film Board, premiered in Iqaluit last November.

On Monday November 7, 2011 Education Minister Premier Eva Aariak was joined by Government Film Commissioner and National Film Board (NFB) Chairperson Tom Perlmutter for the Nunavut premiere in Iqaluit of the landmark Inuit audiovisual legacy project Unikkkausivut: Sharing Our Stories.

The Government of Nunavut has provided significant financial support for Unikkausivut. Our partnership with the NFB will ensure that its collection of films by and about Inuit will be preserved. Every school and library in Nunavut will receive all 34 digitized, translated and Inuktitut version films from the Tuktu and Netsilik series.

These films will be permanently accessible on the Department of Education electronic educational network. Use of these films in our schools will help us in our work to provide culturally relevant, bilingual education to all students in Nunavut.

Unikkausivut gives all Canadians an opportunity to learn about Inuit, and the unique and vibrant part they play in Canada’s heritage and identity.
