GN Saddened by Newmont Decision to Put Mine Activities on Hold

Written by  the Government of Nunavut

(IQALUIT, Nunavut – February 3, 2012) – The Government of Nunavut is saddened by Newmont Mining Corporation’s decision to put mineral development activities on hold at the Hope Bay Project.

The Government of Nunavut is very proud of the Nunavummiut who have worked on this project and the mining skills they have learned – skills that make them ready to be re-employed.

“We are confident that the Hope Bay Project will be developed further in the future,” said Minister of Economic Development & Transportation, Peter Taptuna. “Nunavut is a leading mineral investment destination in Canada and the world.”

Newmont has set a high standard for hiring and training local employees for its mining activities.
