Social Service Review participation accessible to all

Written by  Pam Coulter, Department of Health and Scoial Services

IQALUIT, Nunavut (September 2, 2010) – Nunavummiut are being given an opportunity to participate and provide input into the Government of Nunavut’s Social Services Review as part of a comprehensive public consultation launched today.

"We want to hear everyone's voice during this process. In order to do that, we have ensured that every person, regardless of the language they speak, literacy level, or access to technology, can provide input into the Social Services Review," said the Honourable Tagak Curley, Minister of Health and Social Services.

Between now and November 15, Minister Curley personally invites all Nunavummiut to tell the Department how they can do better by:

  • Filling out a survey on the review website at www.socialservicesreview.gov.nu.ca;
  • Emailing at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ;
  • Calling to leave input verbally at 1-877-771-4449;
  • Filling out a paper questionnaire available at health centres, social services offices, and Inuit organization regional offices; or,
  • Attending one of several community meetings that will take place this fall.

All of these feedback options are available in each of Nunavut’s official languages.

"The entire process has been guided by Inuit values, for all Nunavummiut," explained Minister Curley. "The Knowledge Sharing Forum participants started the process last December. The Social Services Review Advisory Committee, with strong Inuit representation, continues to guide it, and now it’s up to Nunavummiut to provide input into how we can better incorporate Inuit knowledge and family values into our work."

Information gathered will lead the development of a new Child and Family Services Act and will ensure that Nunavut’s children are protected and its families are stronger and better supported by their government and their community.
