Korrina Harvey and Lori Kannak, students from the Social Services Worker Program at Cambridge Bay's Kitikmeot Campus visited Yukon College this past week.
Lori and Korrina were in Whitehorse to attend the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Social Workers in Northern Canada (ASWNC). They also got to sit in on a presentation on Regulation of Social Workers.
All Social Workers, both university and college educated, will need to be registered in order to work in the North West Territories as of January, 2012.
Yukon Territory is looking at creating its own laws in the near future. Registration means both protection of clients and for workers as it establishes standards which workers will have to meet, and for which they will be held accountable.
Lori was elected Student Representative to the Board of the ASWNC for this year.
Lori and Korrina also got to learn about Yukon College's Bachelor of Social Work program. They toured the College, visited the family student residences and chatted with staff and students.
A feature of Yukon that is extra helpful for students from Nunavut is their Access faculty. This group provides assistance to students in order to prepare for studying at the degree level. This includes an actual "access" year in which students upgrade in such subjects as English and Math so that they will have a better chance to be successful when they begin to take the actual university level courses.
Lori and Korrina are hoping in the near future to write the evaluation tests to see their levels and make some decisions regarding next fall.
