This academic year, the Nunavut Teacher Education Program has readily embraced a proactive approach pertaining to the development of partnerships outside and within Nunavut Arctic College. This has proved to be beneficial for students, faculty and course delivery.
Recently, we, at NTEP, initiated a discussion with the Nunavut Nursing Program. The intent was to investigate how both degree programs could conceivably share resources, personnel, classroom space and courses (eg. Inuktitut / Cultural Studies / English, etc.). This could, in essence, create efficiencies that would enhance the learning environment for our students. This initial overture has now resulted in the formation of the Piliriqatigiinniq Committee. The committee takes its title from the Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit principle that translates as:”working together for a common cause”.
Consequently, Leigh Clark, Chairperson: Professional Standards Committee – Education Programs and Sally Naphan, Manager Nursing and Health Sciences, have been tasked with studying and devising a potential schedule for common course offerings and personnel sharing. Once they have completed the study they will draft a proposal that will be presented to the remaining committee members, Brian Manning, Director: Education Programs and Judith Paradis-Pastori, Director: Health and Wellness Programs, for their consideration and input.
The Piliriqatigiinniq Committee anticipates having a plan of action ready for implementation in the 2012/13 academic year.
Brian Manning is Nunavut Arctic College's Director of Education programming in Iqaluit.
