The Nunavut Teacher Education Program and the Nunavut Teachers Association have renewed a key partnership. As a consequence of the agreement, fourth-year NTEP students will be vested with the same rights, responsibilities and professional benefits as regular members of the Nunavut Teachers Association. For example, this will permit them to now register, attend and participate in scheduled sessions during the Territory wide Professional Development Conference to be held in Iqaluit in February / 2012. This partnership will provide opportunities for our Student Teachers to engage in capacity building and enhance their skill sets as they move along the path to degree completion through the University of Regina.

The Nunavut Teacher Education Program presently has Year 4 students completing Practica (Internships) in the following communities and schools in Nunavut:

•    Iqaluit – Nakasuk School
•    Cambridge Bay (Iqaluktuuttiaq) – Kullik Ilihakvik
•    Rankin Inlet (Kangiqtiniq) – Leo Ussak School / Simon Alaittuq School
•    Arctic Bay (Ikpiarjuk) – Inuujaq School
•    Baker Lake (Qamani’tuaq) – Rachel Arngnammaktiq School
•    Repulse Bay (Naujaat) – Tusarvik School
•    Gjoa Haven (Uqhuqtuuq) – Qiqirtaq Ilihakvik

On Tuesday, October 18, the Nunavut Teacher Education Program formally recognized the partnership at Nunatta Campus, Nunavut Arctic College in Iqaluit. A cheque was presented to the Nunavut Teachers Association to cover the Association dues for each of our Level 4 Student Teachers for the academic year.

As well, Certificates of Appreciation were presented to Robin Langill, President (NTA), and Emile Hatch, Executive Director (NTA).

OTTAWA—Their Excellencies the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, and Mrs. Sharon Johnston will conduct an official visit to Nunavut from August 15 to 21, 2011.

“As a vital part of our collective history, there is much we can learn from the Inuit culture,” said His Excellency David Johnston. “My wife, Sharon, and I look forward to meeting with Nunavummiut families and community leaders, to hearing their stories about what Canada means to them, and to learning of the challenges they face in preserving their heritage. We are eager to exchange ideas on their sense of community and the innovative ways to build a smarter, more caring Canadian North.”

During their first official visit to Nunavut, Their Excellencies will travel to all three regions of the territory: Qikiqtaaluk (or Baffin), Kivalliq and Kitikmeot. Their Excellencies will also travel to the communities of Qikiqtarjuaq and Kugaaruk, two communities never before visited by a governor general.
