The Koneks, members of the Nanisiniq Arviat History Project an initiative of the Arviat Elders, the University of British Columbia School of Social Work, and funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) recently returned from Mount Allison University where they produced a documentary on Arctic sovereignty with Dr. Ian Mauro, Canada Research Chair in Human Dimensions of Climate Change.
The Nanisiniq Arviat History Project has seen the young researchers travel across Canada, presenting at conferences around the world such as COP-17 in Durban and Phelisanong in Lesotho. The project, recently highlighted as an example of research talent and Canadian innovation in the 2011-2012 SSHRC Annual Report, has also been presented at academic conferences including International Polar Year in Montreal, the Library and Archives of Canada, the 15th Circumpolar Health Conference in Alaska, Universitas 21 in Shanghai and others.

We would like to thank Pauline, Grant, CBC Northbeat and Igalaaq for doing this story on our youth. We'd especially like to thank Pauline and Grant for taking time out of their busy schedules to visit Arviat's schools, talking to youth about careers in media and CBC, and for giving some great hands-on tips to the Arviat Film Society students!
