Tobacco has no place here: Kikkukiaq

In November 2011, 12 youth from Gjoa Haven, Kugaaruk, Artic Bay, Igloolik, Pond Inlet, Kugluktuk, and Arviat travelled to Iqaluit to participate in a one-week film workshop. At the workshop, these youth produced a series of short public service announcement (PSA) videos for the Government’s new Tobacco Has No Place Here Initiative.

Led by the Iqaluit-based filmmaker Alethea Arnaquq-Baril and coordinated by the Department of Health and Social Services and Atiigo Media, the “Atii-Be Smoke-Free! Youth Video Workshop” educated youth about tobacco and introduced them to basic camera, editing and shooting techniques.

The youth worked closely with an experienced film crew who helped guide them through the film-making process, from idea development to final production. In their videos, youth look at different themes about tobacco use in their lives and communities. Their videos are being used in many different ways as part of the Tobacco Has No Place Here Campaign and as part of an educational DVD for Nunavut students.
