This academic year there has been increased encouragement and emphasis pertaining to the development of a Middle School Education delivery system.

The intent is to devise a program that will prepare Teachers for placement in Grades 7-9 in Nunavut schools. Consequently, a committee was established to study and present proposals to a Partnership Committee (Nunavut Arctic College / Department of Education / University of Regina). The membership of the Middle School Committee was drawn from:

  • Nunavut Teacher Education Program, Nunavut Arctic College
  • Curriculum and School Services, Department of Education
  • University of Regina
  • Nunavut Teacher’s Association
  • Kivalliq and Kitikmeot Teacher Representatives

Two Chairpersons were appointed to lead the discussions: Jim Legge (Manager, NTEP) and Bonita Tucker (Middle Years Teacher Training Coordinator with Curriculum and School Services). The Middle School Committee are meeting this week to fine tune proposals.

The meeting is being hosted by Nunavut Arctic College and is being held in the Board Room adjacent to the Office of the President, Nunavut Arctic College, Michael Shouldice. Consequently, delegates had the opportunity to interact with Michael during breaks in discussion.

We anticipate positive results from these sessions over the next several months.
