Herb Helmstaedt has about 50 years of experience in the field of geology and has been conducting field studies in Northern Canada for 40 years . Herb joined the Geological Survey of Canada in 1969, and became a professor at Queen’s University in 1974, where he also served as Department head for many years.His main research interests are Precambrian field studies, in particular in the Archean Slave and Superior provinces of the Canadian Shield. He also studied structural and tectonic controls of mineral deposits and specialized on the tectonic settings of kimberlites and diamond deposits.
Herb has supervised more than 60 graduate students and participated in the Canadian LITHOPROBE Program as leader of the Western Superior Transect from 1994 to 2004. Since the early 1990’s, he has given numerous short courses on diamond exploration which, together with his consulting, has taken him all throughout Canada and to many parts of the world. Now retired, Herb keeps a busy schedule with research and writing as well as teaching about diamond deposits.
