Recently, Kaviq Kaluraq (Nunavut Teacher Education Program, Science and Mathematics) has been developing two programs to be delivered as a pilot to Year 1 students in Iqaluit and Hall Beach in the new academic year. The courses will be presented in an online blended approach with faculty direction. Additionally, the courses will be semester based. This is in response to course evaluation documents submitted by students who feel that the module approach for some subjects tends to be stressful and less in depth.
Consequently, Kaviq made a presentation to the leadership team this week in an online format. It was a comprehensive and well prepared overview of the two courses. One item of particular interest is that, because of her fluency in written and verbal Inuktitut, she is able to develop and present material in both Inuktitut and English. The two courses under development are: Human Biology and Ecological Studies.
We commend, congratulate and thank Kaviq for her efforts on behalf of Education Programs and Nunavut Arctic College. Kaviq is our youngest faculty member so providing her the opportunity to fully utilize her scientific background is a step forward for us in capacity building within the Nunavut Teacher Education Program.
As well, Kaviq is a Board Member with the Nunavut Impact Review Board (NIRB) and, therefore, is fully cognizant of the implications and requirements of scientific expertise in Nunavut. Hopefully, this will, also, position us well to roll these courses into Middle School Programming and online offerings to teachers who are already in the field in Nunavut.
