Nursing students learn about transferring and lifting patients

First-year Nunavut Arctic College Nursing students learn about transferring and lifting patients. Sally Naphan

Year one Nursing students were fortunate enough to have a very experienced Physiotherapist, Connie Lee, Qikiqtani Regional Physiotherapist, instruct them on Transferring and Lifting Patients.

Students were up and down the stairs on crutches, moving patients from bed to chair and bed to standing using good body mechanics and specialized equipment.

Back problems are something nurses especially need to avoid and Connie is the expert in moving patients safely and protecting nurses’ backs.

The Arctic Nursing Program, developed collaboratively between Nunavut Arctic College and Dalhousie University, is a four year program that focuses on nursing in Nunavut. The degree is conferred by Dalhousie University.

The program is designed to prepare graduates as entry-level practitioners to work in a variety of settings, to include: hospitals, long term care facilities and community based agencies. The curriculum emphasizes awareness and respect for Inuit culture and prepares nurses to be leaders in the health care system of Nunavut.
