GN: Resolute Bay plane crash victims treated at Iqaluit Hospital: Government of Nunavut coordinating crisis counseling response Featured

IQALUIT, NU (August 21, 2026) – Three survivors of yesterday's crash of First Air flight 6560 in Resolute Bay, Nunavut were treated at Iqaluit's Qikiqtani General Hospital (QGH) overnight. The Government of Nunavut's Department of Social Services staff are preparing crisis response counseling services.

Three individuals, one child and two adults, arrived at Qikiqtani General Hospital at approximately 9:00 p.m. last evening. Two survivors have since been medevaced to Ottawa, Ontario while the third was admitted. The one adult who was critical upon departure from Resolute Bay has been downgraded to stable but serious condition.

“We’re deeply saddened to hear the news of this airplane crash. Our hearts and thoughts go out to those affected throughout Nunavut,” said Nunavut Premier Eva Aariak. “This will be a difficult time for so many people – please take care of each other. This is part of our culture and going to be important now more than ever.”

“This is a horrible tragedy for Nunavut,” said Tagak Curley, Minister of Health and Social Services.“Crisis response personnel will arrive in Resolute Bay today and we will continue to coordinate crisis counseling for any family members or friends in other communities.”

As counseling needs in other communities become evident professional counselors will be made available to both individuals and communities. Contact information for these services will be through your local social worker. In the meantime, if you require immediate assistance please call your community health centre.
