What is Smoke Screening?
Smoke Screening is a tobacco education media awareness activity for grades 6-12 in Nunavut, Northwest Territory and Yukon. Students view 13 of the best tobacco education ads from around the world and select the one they feel is most effective. Viewing the ads usually initiates great classroom discussions. This year it has two components: Smoke Screening (Ad Viewing and Voting) and Get Reel (Video Creation)
IQALUIT, Nunavut (January 20, 2026) – Students from across Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Yukon are participating in Get Reel, a video campaign to create anti-tobacco ads, as part of this year’s pan-territorial Smoke Screening initiative.
The ASIST workshop is for anyone who wants to feel more comfortable, confident and competent in helping to prevent the immediate risk of suicide. This academic year, the Nunavut Teacher Education Program has readily embraced a proactive approach pertaining to the development of partnerships outside and within Nunavut Arctic College. This has proved to be beneficial for students, faculty and course delivery.
Nunavut Arctic College Nursing student Nancy Mike and Andrew Morrison from the Nunavut Research Institute were at the Arctic Bay trade show disseminating information and recruiting students to the various nursing programs including the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Practical Nursing and Pre-Nursing programs.
This documentary was filmed on Baffin Island in the small Inuit community of Clyde River. The film explores how the Hip Hop Program at the Ilisaqsivik Centre has had a positive impact on the lives of many local youth.

A visit from hip hop/social work group Blue Print for Life inspired the Ilisaqsivik Centre to create an ongoing hip hop program to keep the local youth inspired and involved. The program coordinators tell the audience that to be successful, youth programs must have continuous, consistent community support.

IQALUIT, Nunavut (December 13, 2025) Six women in Action will be taking Steps of Hope towards a shared vision of health and wellness from Umingmaktuuq to Cambridge Bay, approximately 155 miles across the Coronation Gulf in May 2012.
(November 28, 2025 -- Iqaluit, Nunavut) Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. President Cathy Towtongie, the Honourable Eva Aariak, Premier of Nunavut and the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Federal Minister of Health today announced the release of the Nunavut Community Wellness Planning (NCWP) pilot projects. The project was undertaken in partnership between NTI, Government of Nunavut, Health Canada and six Nunavut communities. Health Canada provided $2.4 million in funding for the project through the Aboriginal Health Transition Fund.
